Default transmission question

I have a 4 cyl mustang and the transmission grinds in second gear. In the future I plan on doing the 5.0 conversion, but for now I want to know if a t-5 out of a v8 car would work fine with my 4 cyl engine?

pilot bearing is different (4 cylinder is same on in an 80's diesel ranger I believe)
change pilot bearing and no problem, v8 t5 is merely stronger.

So all that I would need to do is switch out the pilot bearing using the one from v8 and it would work fine with 4cyl flywheel?
