Default tire size question

ive got the factory 245 45 17 tires on my what i guess is a 17x8 wheel , whats the widest tire i can put on that rim an not look stupid, ive put small spacers on the back to move the rear wheels out, on the 94 up cars they sit in to far without a aftermarket rim

I have used 275/40/17's on factory 8" wheels and they look good.....

I don't know what kinda of tire your looking for but I have also used 275/50/17 M&H DR's on my 05 GT factory wheels..... They looked really good because they are 28" tall and filled the fenderwell nicely.....

im definitely going for the look, a drag radial would be a joke on her car ,i dont think it would turn the tires loose in a snow storm..lol..maybe later if we throw enough money at it, im just trying to make it look a bit better, its a 97gt an like others has that weird offset in the rear from the factory

275 fits on the 8" but it sorta rolls over. a 255/40 is the best proper fitting tire

275/40 fits fine on stock 96 - 98 17x8 GT wheels. I ran 245/45 on the front with 275/40 on the rear. Doesnt set of the ABS because they are the same diameter. 255/40 will be a smaller diameter tire and look pretty ridiculous if the car isnt lowered. Also,.. will need to be all 4 matching if going that route,.. other wise will set the ABS off. Visually you probably wont be able to tell the difference between the 255 and a 245. Most 275 you can tell the difference,.. BFG is usually slightly wider then rated,.. 275/40 BFG drag radials are almost as wide as 315/35 Nitto 555R's.

This was an old 96 GT I had. This is what 275/40 BFG Drag Radials look like on stock 17x8 wheels.

Here is a good link to compare tire sizes.
Tire Size Calculator - tire & wheel plus sizing

Edit:

I found some better pics that show the difference of 275 tires on 17x8 vs 17x9 wheels.

This was my wife's 96 Cobra with 275/40 tires on 17x9 wheels. I think the tires in these pics were Khumo's on the rear and Fuzion ZRi on the front. Car had 17x9 wheels and 275/40 tires front and rear.

This was the same 96 GT in the first pic. Tires are 275/40 Fuzion ZRi on factory 17x8 wheels. I had 245 on the front and 275 on the rear.

Hope that helps.

As for wheel offsets.
As long as the car has stock length axles,.. this applies to both,.. Fox and SN95 cars.
It does not matter the wheel size,.. 15, 16, 17 or 18 inch wheels,.. the back space applies to all size wheels.

8 inch wide wheel needs a 5.5 BS.
4.5 BS does work,.. BUT,.. you wont be able to run a 255 - 275 tire on the wheel with out shredding the tire on the fenders because it will stick out. Stock 225 - 235 tires will be about it.

9 inch wheel needs a 5.78 - 6 inch BS.

10 - 11 inch wheel needs a 6.5 inch BS.

Fox wheel wells are a little smaller and shallower on the inside then SN95 cars and usually need some BFH work inside to make 10" wide wheels and tires work with out rubbing. Depending on the tire,.. SN95 cars can do a 315/35 tire on the back and keep the quad shocks. Impossible on fox cars with out beating in the inner fender and removing the quad shocks.

Not the same,.. and their grossly contorted on the rims. No offense,.. .
With stock axle width on a 10.5 rim (The proper way to do a 315/35 tire) the quads would have to be removed and the inner would need at least some minor tweaking. The smaller diameter allows you to get the wider meats with less banging. Especially when you consider what needs to be done to make a 275/60 R15 tire fit back there,.. particularly if the car is lowered. Your car is modified so it doesnt count.

And on the note of having 95 axles on there,.. how would a 10.5 wheel fit? Have you tried it yet? Is there enough room where rolling the fender works,.. or will the fender shred the tire? I've been a little curious myself,.. I've thought about swapping an SN95 axle on the back of mine for easy disc brakes,.. but having the drums back there doesnt really bother me that much. I would want the rear discs more for show then any real stopping power they may or may not provide compared to the drums. With out ABS I like being able to manually adjust the drums vs trial and error with a proportioning valve for the discs.

True they look a little funky not to bad... the tires where free so i put them on lol ...I also have been wondering how a 10.5 would fit plenty of room on the inside...
