Quick Question
Quick Question
When rebuilding my motor, as far as the timing chain cover gasket, water pump gasket, and similar things of that nature, is it okay to use a general all purpose white silicone sealant (water resistant) in place of a gasket? Thanks.

if there is a gasket offered for it always use the gasket. If not then its ok to use a form-a-gasket compound but the good quality ones are usually a dark color not white silicone.

yeah, I'll use the gaskets in all the major areas, but I know in some places where the gasket may be very frail anyways, it's recommended to use a silicone in place, I just didn't know if the silicone I bought was the right kind.

put the gasket on the timing set.. if rtv was better the factory would use rtv... but hey its your motor do as you will.
white silicone will get eatin up by motor oil.

get some good gaskets man . The word budget doesnt mean cheap . The only place silicone is better is at each end of the intake , and then you should use Right Stuff. It's the best . Hey it's yours do what you want , but after all the bullshit you've been through, asking whether you should use silicone leads me to believe you kinda asked for it . Come on man , gaskets are to cheap to half ass . where else have you at least wanted to half ass ?
