Default How many of you run an open header?

I was thinking if i needed to spend $$ money for exhaust system on a car that I don't plan on running on the street. Performance wise, what is the better option?

If it is stricktly for the track, then you may loose a bit of bottom end, but the top end will do better. I've run both ways at the track before. I dropped 2 tenths off my times by running open headers. To me, it's not worth the added hearing loss. Just my .02

I dont think I need a full exhaust though, maybe an h pipe into glass packs?

I read in hot rod mag a few years back that running open headers actually may hurt your horsepower slightly and that running a crossover pipe into duels works better. H pipe and no glasspacks would probably work too.

Glass packs actually HURT performance IIRC. But I'm not a "tech" or even a "mechanic". I only know what my own experience was.

Here is what I did:

Long tubes
After the long tubes, I put on 2 1/2" collectors, to an H-pipe. Immediatly after the H-pipe, I had cutouts. After the cut outs, I had full 2 1/2" exhaust mandrel bent to the rear. I suspect that my torque didn't suffer as much because I had it necked down to a 2 1/2" collector and then the H-pipe right before the cutouts.

You're best off talking to your engine builder, or a performance shop person though and tell them what your specific combination is, as this plays a HUGE part of whether or not you will be hurting your performance. My personal suggestion is Dave at Genium Performance. (91Notch on here)

Most tracks require some sort of mufflers. Unless its on 44's and has a whip antenna stay away from glasspacks.
Big tires and open headers arent impressive.... RTCTTFMFERS

Glasspack was just a generalazation for a straight muffler.

I'm on open headers right now. It's very much loud... I have a 1,000 watt sound system in my car, and I'm having to crank it just to hear it out the exhaust.

Some circle track guys run a "Bullit" muffler. Has small baffles on the inside but its practically straight pipe, My brother use's them because Desoto SS chacks shit like that, Its a good way to beat the system if you have to run a muffler.
