What is the answer?
I used the Taylor Wire protectors. They are made out of some stuff that will not burn, I know I put FIRE to them to test them.
I had the same problem with the stainless Ford headers on my P heads. It kept burning up the one by the oil dipstick tube (#7 I think)
I am using the Ford Racing wires.
I put these on there about 3 years ago and havent had a problem since.
In the Projects forum, under my car in "Progress of a never ending project". on page 2 there is a side shot of my engine with them on it.
Good luck.

The Taylor 45 degree boots worked for me when I had this problem when I had BBK egual length shory's.
Also dont be affraid to get some header rap and put it around the tubes that are giving you problems....then even on top of that use the boot protector.
Might be over kill but with those three things in place it should NEVER burn again!

Tommy, The problem is not the individual heat of that tube. It is the design of the tube it's self. You see, the wire boot actually touches the header tube. So, no matter what I do, it will burn. I would have to have it running so rich that it was pure fuel going down the tube to make it cool enough not to burn the boot....and that may not be enough to solve the problem.
Dave and everyone else who suggested the boot sleeves. I already have those on #3 and #4 boots. This solved the number 4 boot problem, but #3 is still an issue.
Dave, I have put header wrap on that tube, and I have 90* angle boot on it as well as the boot sleeve. It still burned.
I only have one layer of the header wrap on there though, maybe I need more?
