run stock rods or buy new ?
looking for a little advice here. dropped my motor off at the machine shop last week and machinist recommended i just run the stock 351w rods w/ some arp bolts. he said it would cost me $180 with him cleaning them up and the new bolts. i was planning on buying some scat h-beams but not sure if i could get by with using the stock rods or not. didnt know if he is just telling me this so he can make an extra $180 or if my old c90e rods would hold up. motor will see 650-700hp on the bottle. thanks for any help
Pay now or pay later. If you plan to spin over 6k I would invest in the rods and a crank. You can still make good power below 6,.. but at the power level your aiming for and even at say 6500 rpm,.. thats a good bit of stress. I think it would hold for a long while. But eventually you would see a failure. Its like pushing a mod motor to 450hp. Sure it might stay together for almost a year,.. but how much damage is it going to cost you when it goes?

The early blocks are good for 800hp,.. 600 - 650 with stock rods and crank. With good machining and balance the early blocks can even go as high as 1000hp. But he's wanting to spin over 6000 rpm. At the 400 - 500hp levels they might take 6500 rpm on a regular basis,.. but 800hp is a considerable difference on a stock rotating assembly.
Why chance it?
Thats like a mod guy buying a fully forged rotating assembly,.. puts it all together and never spent the first dime on machine work or any balancing. Then cries that his rotating assembly is junk when it blows up. If your going to make that kind of power,.. you need to have the supporting mods to back it up or your going to break shit.
