transmission question
well i didnt want to thread jack the other transmission thread with my questions..
this is the motor i am having built for my car:
Stage 2 ported PI heads
Port matched PI intake
Bronze guides, SS valves, good springs
Custom cams
Rebuilt Teksid shortblock (cast 6 bolt crank)
11.5:1 compression - still runs on 93 octane
Powerband from 3500-7000, HP peak around 6300RPM
this same set-up he built for someone else is running really low 12's (but his is auto and a vert) im just wondering if i should rebuild my 84k mile transmission while the motor is out or will it be ok for a while? i've never had any problems with it grinding or anything else.. any suggestions on a rebuild kit? how much does it usually cost to have one rebuilt? or should i just upgrade to a different transmission?

I am assuming since your talking about PI heads that you have a mod motor, and I am assuming you have a manual transmission????
What year is your car?
If its a t45 then yes you have to do something with it cause they are not the strongest transmission. Might live for a little bit but it will go eventually.
If its a 3650 your a little better off but not too much.

The T45 was good to about 300-350 hp or so if I remember correctly as long as you dont hammer on it. They didnt like tach drops apparently. The 3650 is a little stronger than the T45 but again like 91notch said not by much. They switched trannies in 02. I cant remember what the door badge number is for it though. I want to say the 02 with a 3650 has an X in the vin somewhere. I would think if your going to have a combo like that and you put some sticky tires on it with a really tight clutch then youll need to beef up the tranny a little. I would just get some form of TKO and be done with it.
An aftermarket shifter will really help the span line of your tranny behind that or any other motor for that matter but either the T45 or the 3650 will go at some point.

The main problem I see with t45's is the shift forks get bend from shifting and I have seen a handful of broken input shafts also.
Like stated above swaping over to a TKO is probably the best route to go.
Yes they do make beefed up parts for a t45 but they tend to get pricey.

i have a 98gt.. my tranny is a t-45 with a b&m shifter and a brand new ford racing king cobra clutch..
You might want some upgrades or just have another tranny waiting for when yours eventually goes out. Everything I have read seems to point to those trannies lasting just fine on a Non-PI motor with lots of bolt ons but they seem to start breaking when you put boost to the motor. Your combo will probably be putting out around the same amount of power as a Non-PI boosted motor would. Maybe not as much torque but it will definately be in the neighborhood.

i realisze that isn't the norm but it has a lot to do with how it's assembled and shifted.
btw most "shops" will charge 2-300$ to go completely through it.

i wish someone could do it and teach me while they are doing it.. i hate not being able to do my own shiiit.. i would usually bust out the haynes and teach myself.. but this is one of those things i dont need to break..
