Thumbs up 2001 Cobra IRS to Solid Axle Swap ::: Complete

Drove up to TN this weekend and installed the 8.8" that I got from "saleencoupe93" on here (thanks brother) into my cousin's '01 Cobra. We installed some Granatelli Upper & Lower Control Arms (thanks Hurstmeister!) and a set of Mach1 rear springs (thanks Kailuaz!) on the rear end before installing it. IRS came out of the car with like 6 bolts and came out in one piece. Has a broken half shaft (at the boot at the rotor) - other than that it's still in good shape (lmk if you guys know anyone that would wanna buy it for like $200?). Solid axle went right in, lined right up, bolted right in... All the concerns that came up: driveshaft, rear brakes, ABS electronics, etc - no issues; not a one. The stock '01 Cobra driveshaft fit fine, the rear brakes - we used the disc setup that was on the rear, and just went ahead and changed the line to the caliper and used the car's line instead of the one that was affixed to the solid axle ((need to go back in and do a hard line delete on the solid axle when I get the car to FL)), the ABS electronics didn't have to be spliced and lengthened, all was well/perfect.

Thanks to everyone for their input, advice, and tips/ideas on things that could go wayward!! We wanted to be prepared for "worst case scenario" if that shit didn't work, but it all worked and the car's ready to hit the track again ASAP!

Oh, I do have to take it to a mufler shop and get the exhaust fabbed to go up and over the live-axle now though, lol. I just cut the pipes right behind the mufflers, and it's basically running dumps right now

Vortech + 4 valve Cobra + solid axle + beautiful weather in TN = SNAKE BIT!!! I fucking miss having a new edge supercharged behemoth to blast around in everyday!!! We did a couple hard launches, did a brake torque through 1st and 2nd, did some hard cornering, and did some high speed highway pulls - and the rear end did flawless!!!!!!

Eric, I didn't get any videos - the video camera that my cousin has took a shit; go figure.

Hurst, I am uploading the photos now bud and will post them momentarily - nothing great, just a few after the removal/install. We were in such a freaking hurry to get the car put together, my uncle packed, the shop tools/equipment loaded, etc. that we didn't take the time to photo and document the entire swap like I would have in normal instances.

Brian, we're going to be bringing the car down in the summer after my cousin gets out of school. Until then, we've gotta sort out these upshift issues w/this tranny we put in my uncle's '96 GT - come see me when you got a day off brother!

No sway bar?

He will definitely want to put a sway bar on the back,.. not only for the track,.. but especially for better street manners. Will be very loose with out it.

Car is fine w/o the sway bar. I drove the shit out of the thing. It handled just fine surprisingly. We're going to be adding a lot of suspension and other things to the car when it gets here to FL.

Smoke, I flew up, drove back in a 26' Budget rent-a-truck. We passed by your place at about 1am on Sunday night / Monday morning on the way back. We talked about ya, but there was no stopping bud!
