Default fattest tires under a 96

Gonna autocross a 96 mustang, what's the fattest tire and rim combo (with measurements) that I can get under one of these, with little or no bending of the sheet metal, especially the fronts, since these cars tend to understeer,
thanks

17x10.5 or 18x11 with a 325 tire is as wide are your going to fit in the rear with out major modifications. A 315 will fit with out having to roll the fender lip. Up front a 17x9 or 18x9 with 275 wide tire is typical and fits fine with no rubbing issues.

A typical tire wheel combo is 17x9 up front with 275/40 tires and out back would be 17x10.5 with a 315/35 tire. I ran that combo on a 96 Cobra that had a 2" drop in the front and rear. The rear quad shock dont have to be removed with certain tires. Nitto's fit fine with about a pinky finger between the tire and quad shock. With BFG DR's the tire rubbed the quad shock. With aftermarket lowers removing the quad shock is not an issue.

I have seen wider tires up front on auto cross cars,.. but fender modifications were done.

Thanks Hurst,
one more thing I have a set of 8 or 8.5 inch wide 17 inch 35 anniversary rims floating around are the offsets different on a 96?
I'll be running the same size tire all of the way around, it's real easy to overtire the rear of the car, unlike the drag guys, with all of the front end weight on the mustang we could probably use as much or more tire up front in order to get them to turn.

keep em matched sizes honestly. You should get in contact with 3dglasses and vertigyn. 3dglasses has a 03 cobra he auto-xes a lot and vertigyn has a mach 1 that he flogs as well. They are both at a lot of auto-xes and run with a few clubs.

94-98 are the same front and rear. The 99 - 04 cars have a slightly wider rear track width,.. but use the same offset wheels as all 94 - 04 cars can share the same wheels.
