Default Odometer/trip meter question.

Car is a 1994 Grand Marquis

The odometer hasn't been working for awhile, then recently the trip meter called it quits.

Looking to find out whether they are mechanically driven or use a electrical sensor.

The speedometer does work.

I have seen a few things online, where people are suggest there is a stripped gear inside the cluster, but that doesn't explain to me how the odometer stopped working and THEN the trip meter stopped.

Any help is appreciate, thanks all...

because the gear that drives the odometer part breaks, and the tripmeter is part of the odometer...i would imagine its the same set up as the mustangs that have the common problem, i fix the mustang ones all the time

So you're saying that the speedometer drives the odometer and the odometer drives the trip meter?

If ^ is correct, that wouldn't explain why the trip meter would be working while the odometer would not be.

I just pulled it apart.

The speedo sends an electrical current to both the odometer and trip meter motors which have a gear that mesh with another gear onto the counter itself. It seems as if the gears have been melted over time.

Now, does anyone know where I can get new gears for this?

n8secstangg, you say you fix clusters all the time in mustangs, where do you get the gears from?
