Default rear axle question's.

well me and stephen were looking at my atang last night trying to figure some thing's out about it and we pulled the tag off of the pumpkin and the only thing that we could make out was that it's a 7.5 rear end. now all the other number's dont make sense at all and i would like to know what gear's are in here. now im sure that on my 92 vert the gears were like 2.73 or something like that but this one feel's alot different and i dont really have much top end. so here are the number's.

And with 3:08's you would have a LOT of top end.

You sure its a 7.5 rear?

Seems kinda strange to me. Because in 86 the V8 cars got the 8.8 rear. All others got the 7.5. And the 3.08 and 2.73 were standard gear in the V8 cars. I dont have a book with the specs,.. but seems like an awful tall gear to be used behind a 4 or 6 cylinder car. Usually with smaller motors you find a 3.45 or 3.73 gear. But the tag you have there is or was clearly a 3.08 in there.

Also,.. the tag means little if the rear gear has been changed.

With both wheels jacked in the air,.. count how how many times the drive shaft rotates for 1 full rotation of the wheels. If a 3.08,.. the drive shaft should turn near 3 times. A 3.73 would turn 3 and 3/4 times. 4.10,.. 4 times. Etc etc.

Also,.. is it a limited slip or posi rear?

No real biggie if its not a 8.8.
The 7.5 can take plenty of abuse on the street. At your current HP level you have little to worry about in the rear end. A fox 8.8 can be had for pretty cheap. I would work on the rest of the car first,.. and when you get to the point where everything is safe and reliable,.. and you your motor gets near the 300hp level,.. then its time to start thinking about an 8.8.

For now I would just enjoy your car and get the main things fixed first.

couldn't read the 3:08 in the dark, but the odd thing is the ID tag usually has 7.5 or 8.8 if memory serves, any how the top of the cover didn't go past the uca mounts, junk yard guide to rears

youd have a high theortically top end. If I could pull to red line in my old gear with 3.27s it be 210 mph. But id need about 500 more hp to make that.

well it's suposably a locking rear end. now if im sitting still and rev the motor then take off both tire's spin. but when i had it up in the air last night,(i had to change the shoe's cuz one came apart and was locking up my right rear wheel.) when you spin one tire the other one goes the oppisite way. i should of seen about the how many time's the axle turn's, but i was upset and in a hurry plus not even thinking of the gears at the time. i just wanted to get home for i was stuck at a friends house.

i guess it will help a little more once my speed ometer work's but i cant go all the fast. getting to speed is another story though. the stang goes threw gears so fast it's almost not even worth using 1st gear.
