nm I think its to read the exhaust temp.

A pyrometer is what you see the pro race teams pointing at the ground near the starting line. It measures the temperature of the ground or anything else you point it at. A EGT sensor (exhaust gas temperature)is what measures the exhaust temperature as the abbreviation shows. Hope that helps.
