Exclamation Need Advice for a 96 Lincoln Towncar

Okay, here's the deal. I have a 96 Licoln Towncar and I was driving down the street and I started to hear grinding in the rear end, then the rear end locked up and I slid to a stop. LOL. I was right in the middle of SR 590. Anyways, i ended up throwing it in reverse and it kinda unlocked and then I pulled over to the side of the road with it still grinding and locking up often. Anyine have any ideas on what it might be? I'm hearing its the axle/bearings, idk. I thought it was the E Brake and I dc'd it but that didnt work. Thanks!

Oh and I'm gonna need it fixed. If its the axle/bearings or whatever, can I do it myself or is it most likely gonna have to go to a shop?

Sounds like gears gone bad. Hit up 91Notch on here. He can hook you with some new ones for a decent price and get the job done quick.

Shiny: I jacked the car up and I dont see anything wrong, dang-ling or broke.

95SVT: Thanks for the info. I'll ask 91Notch and see what I can find out.

Duce: Also, thanks for the info. Got any idea if its easy to fix? or should I take it to a shop?

you gotta pull the axle and either run a axle saver bearing or get another axle form the junkyard and replace the bearing and seal

Hmmm....okay. Do you have an idea on how long it would take to do with 1 or 2 people? Also, is it hard to pull out the axle? Do I need any special tool or anything? Thanks!

Like 95SVT said, that it might be the gears. The car still wants to drive and still goes in all gears. Rev, Drive, 2,1 etc. So more likely it's just the axle bearing?
