Default electrical question

I have an 89 gt. I parked it before our storm this week. and everything was fine. went out friday and cranked it up and the amp gauge was pegged at 18 amps. if i turned the lights on it would drop down a bit but still way to high. is there a voltage reg. on these cars or what else would cause this. I'm kinda new to stangs but thought i would tap into the knowledge of everybody here before i start tearing apart stuff.

sounds like what mine did when the alternator went out. check the plug on the alternator and the fuseable link by the solenoid.

It's internally regulated. The alt needs rebuilt/replaced.
