Default What makes a rad go boom??

I was driving the workvan to a job today and "Boom" accompanied by fluid on windshield( 5mph at light).

Pulled over and this is what I had?? Cap looks ok... but I think it would allow pressure to build if it was faulty. may have been a lil low on water.Rad is clean inside.

Probably running high pressure due to the ambient temp and it overcame the soldered joint between the core and the ent tank (or top tank in this case).

+1 on excessive pressure... I have also seen it happen when there is a blown head gasket.. and a faulty cap, there's no where for the pressure to go, so it takes the path of least resistance.. the radiator tank.

Thanks Steve, I realize pressure was more than it could take. Question was why?
I got another rad swapped in today with a new cap... so ill see if theres any other issues now.

If a headgasket were to cause the radiator to pop, you'd damn sure notice the motor running funny. I think it was just high ambient temps and an old radiator. You should be good to go with the new rad.
