Default Ford Probe..need some help

I bought a 93' Probe GT yesterday for 900 bucks..steal. Besides minor interior issues there's one that really needs to be fixed but I'm not even sure what it is.

When your driving and you hit a pothole or your shifting gears there is a clunking type noise that comes out from the rear passenger side wheel area. Got a little carried away yesterday on turning and all (checking out the suspension), and then there was some smoke coming from there as well.

I'm thinking, is this a brake system issue or a suspension problem? I really want to get this fixed and know a few junkyards, the thing is I dont know what the hell to look for.

Any help would be appreciate..thanks guys!

Jack up the rear and try to turn the wheels. If they turn it's not likely a brake problem. Take it out on a road trip while it's not raining. When you get back, do it again and feel the face of the rim. If that rim is hotter than the rest, then you have a problem. Check the bearings also. There are also some suspension things that could cause the clunking you are mentioning, but none that would cause smoking. Bearings or brakes are about it....Maybe some water splashed up on the exhaust?

If it was just noise it could also be the cv joint. But sounds like bearings to me.

+1 could be a motor mount as well, considering you said it happened when shifting too.. smoking could have been from overworking the steering with a loose belt.
