Default 2001 Explorer issue...

Just inherited a Explorer XLT from the parents as they moved onto an Enclave.. It has about 76k miles on it and everything seems to be alright except for an issue that has cropped up over the past 3 days. I had 2 occurrences of sitting at a light and off of a sudden it idles rougher than normal and then it dies. Shifting into park and restarting the car works fine, but it is a bit unnerving. I don't know jack shit about cars so I wanted to ask here before taking it somewhere without any idea as to the cause.

Thanks!

Interesting. My '98 Ranger 2.5L does the same thing...well, it doesn't die but occasionally it shakes like hell for a few seconds at idle. I've changed the plugs, wires and coil packs but it didn't change a thing. So, I don't have any advice but be comforted in the knowldge that you're not alone.

Do an induction service on it!! Will help a lot. dirty t/b and intake will cause this every time. I see it day in and day out at work.

On mine, when I first bought it, the CEL light wold come on occasionally. It was throwing a code for the EGR. It would be on for a few days then it wold go out on its own. After a few months, it went out and hasn't come back on since.

Topher, what all is involved in that? Clean out the TB and MAF wires and maybe a new filter element? Anything else? I'm a noob at 4 bangers and OBDII.
