Exclamation need help

i need help with my timing my motor has a gear drive timing set up and i've been having problems with the car since i bought it in order for me to get the car any where close to running right without popping flames out of the carb i've got to advance the timing to 50 degree's or more what could be causing this problem please any info will be helpful and also i heard that a gear drive will rob you of hp is this true or not

That gear drive does rob a little hp. Personally I don't like them, they tend to break and like I said they use up a little hp. IMO throw those things in the trash and go back to a double roller timing chain setup. And as for the back firing are you shure you have the distributor in right?

yes i have the distributer in right what i'm thinking is wrong is who ever put in the gears put in retarded

Well pull the front timing cover and see if all the dots line up when you get to TDC and there will be your answer. BTW I would go back to a double roller setup while I was in there.

i run gears in mine, no problems at all. i bet someone messed up the alignment.

make sure the balancer didn't spin on it's hub. any vibrations? an old balancer can make setting timing a joke.

never had a set of gears break on me!! Don't have to worry about anything streching either.
