Why 8.8 Explorer rear Offset?

Default Why 8.8 Explorer rear Offset?

Can anyone tell me whats the reason for a pinion offset to the pass. side on the 8.8 rears of the explorers?

because the motor is off center, plus to clear the fuel tank with the driveshaft, but probably mostly due to the need for clearance for the 4WD system

Whenever I looked at the engine it never really looked like it was offset, but it did cross my mind.

They do that so you can't use them on a Mustang.

even a mustangs motor is off set, if your axels are the same width, that means the pinion is not in the centerline of the car, so the motor has to be offset. In my car the motor is about 1" to the passenger side.

Offset mainly for gas tank clearance. Its a byproduct of the old rangers that started the trend.
