Default 1999 ford explorer over heating..

it's just over heating.. when he pulled up to my house it sounded like it was knocking.. but after it cooled off it doesnt sound like it is anymore.. the oil didnt look milky either.. im thinkin it's the thermostat or the water pump..but im not to sure..when it cools off im gonna take out the thermostat and see what happens...

any ideas on what it could be?

Make sure there is enough coolant in the truck, then check to see if the fan is turning on and then the thermostat and finally the pump.

Thats the order I usually do stuff when it comes to cooling systems, also make sure that neither hose is pinched.
