not a technical guy myself but I would say a high lift cam will definitely change the drivability of your car especially if you're worried about gas milage. It quite possible can make your car slower unless you match it up to the correct parts (compression, heads, intake, maf, injectors, exhaust, etc).
if you want more performance but keep some economy stay on the low side of big cams, work more on the efficiency of your motor such as intake tract and exhaust can free up horsepower, also a short belt, the proper gearing, and lightening your car will all make huge differences and will only really affect economy as you push the go pedal too much but will not hurt on normal driving.

for example, I've had a low 12 second car that was a fairly mild but good combination get 23 mile per gallon freeway.............I've also had a mid 12 second car that was a beast to drive, overheated in traffic, idled like a pro stock, and got about 8 mpg freeway!!
hope this helps
