Default E-brake Question

So yesterday I bought a 1990 Mustand 2.3lt, aaaand the emergency brake doesn't work. I don't feel comfortable JUST putting it into gear when I park so I really need to figure out how to fix it. The people I bought it from said it's most likely just the cable (I think) but I am 100% clueless when it comes to that, but I am willing to learn. So... does anyone know of any ways to fix an e brake cable?

Sorry if this is a retarded question.

Shouldn't be a problem, most of us here have those parts.
Is the button still in the end of the handle?

Yeah. I can pull it up no problem but it still rolls a little.

Does the handle make a clicking sound and stay up when you let it go?
If it "works a little" now the rear brakes could just be WAY out of adjustment. easy fix...

i don't have a parking brake on the cobra... it's really not that big of a deal. Especially in FL... everything is flat.

Does it make a difference if I'm on an incline when I park or not?

My 85 does not have one, and my 97's does not work. I can put it to the floor while driving and nothing happens, the adjuster is WAY off.

I wouldn't trust just being in gear on a steep hill (think colorado) and would definitely have a parking brake, but in Florida it's not really necessary.

Odds are that the rear shoes are out of adjustment (and not helping you stop when you use the normal brakes either.).

If you're that worried about it, I'd start with a set of pads an a rear drum brake rebuild kit. IIRC, the kits should run you like 8 bucks a side. Last time I needed one autozone had it in stock. Have fun with the springs... I HATE drum brakes...
