Default Oil burning question

I have a 1999 Mustang GT and i've noticed it burns alot of oil. I've never had a leak or it smoke, but I recently checked it and it was way low.. Has anyone ever had this problem with the 2v 4.6's. Could it be a problem with the motor, or are these prone to do this. Car is stock with an o/r X pipe. Any info would be appreciated. Oh and also what oil do you suggest running, maybe to help stop the burning.. Thanks guys

Not daily driving. I've had the car since september and put maybe 3500 miles on it. Only time I get on it is if im racing someone, which isnt entirely that often. Other than that I drive it normal.

Ford says that if a motor uses one quart of oil per 1,000 miles is not excessive oil comsumption.

what about nearly 5 quarts in 3000? would that be considered "excessive"?
