My friend has a 99 Explorer with teh 5.0 engine. She said that when she starts it up you can hear a rattle/knock from teh top end of the motor and there is no oil pressure. Once warmed up the pressure comes up and the knock goes away. After driving for 15 minutes or so the knock comes back (not sure if the pressure goes away)

Anyone have any idea whats going on here?

*edit* please see below post. Not low on oil and there is no pressure. Oil pump? Sending unit?

 

Low on oil, the knock you hear at first are lifters, then once the oils and metals expand you will hear it again. You need oil.

 

So you think its just low? That would be a very easy fix for her. Thanks and Ill post up the results

 

Something like that happened to my fathers excursion but it had to much oil

 

bump. Car has no oil pressure. Where would be a good place besides the dealer to get this checked out? You can hear the lifters after about 5 minutes but its not all that bad. Oil is where is should be so its not low

hah! She did say that all maintence has been done on time.

I drove it from Oldsmar to tampa today with zero pressure (bad i know) but jsut now i started it up to move it from the driveway and the pressure went right up and the lifter noise went right away.

I just got off the phone with someone who also said the screen may be clogged, that or the pump.

 

Can anyone recommend a good place to take it and have the screen checked and/or pump changed besides the dealership?
