Default What generally happens when...

the camshaft and crankshaft are not lined up properly?

First of all, my car sounds real lopey with that ecam in there, and with the backfiring and poor performance, a couple of my family friends have mentioned the cam and crank not being aligned properly (like a tooth off, dots not lining up)

Does this make any sense whatso ever?

It's possible. But I would suspect the timing being out of whack or a vacuum leak before that.
