I had one along time ago..I put a bungee cord from one fender to the other fender..kinda over the hood...I strapped a grenade under it and put a brick on the pedal and drove that bitch off a cliff. You should do the same... No I had one for about 2 weeks and found it to be a piece of shit...I junked it.

*cough* bastage!

The 1.9's were dogs from the start with only 88 crank horsepower and around 103 ft lbs torque vs the next generation with 110 crank horsepower and 132ft lbs torque. As you see in my sig my bone ass stock SPI only put down 88whp with an automatic. That tells you what you're working with here . If you really want to go fast cheap get another car. I keep the car for the challenge of it, nothing else

You beat an Escort?! Who doesnt?
You got beat by an Escort?!?

If you are going to modify the car: First and foremost if you have an automatic, STOP and get a manual car or swap to a manual transmission. Cheap and easy is a 1.9 HO header off the first gen escort GT's it's a 4-2-1 long tube header upgrade for that motor. The 1997+ SPI throttle body is another bolt on upgrade. The best way to get some horsepower/torque is to swap that motor out for the 1997 SPI engine which is a direct bolt in, then throw the header on and a 3.8 throttle body from a taurus. Expect to run in the 18 second range 1/4 mile stock with your car, automatic is in the 19-20 second range. The SPI swap would put you in the low 16's high 15's right off the bat, which is a good base for stock 4 bangers. There's not many sites left for these cars. The most popular ones are www.feoa.net and www.escortunderground.com, you will find alot of information about upgrades etc on there.

1.8 is out of the question as it's a Mazda motor not a Ford as well as not being direct bolt in. a 2.0 SPI motor from a newer Escort is. The H.O. header can be found in the local cophers junkyards as well as the SPI throttle bodies.

www.blackdiamondracing.com sells a UDP for the car, www.escortfocus.com sells alot of other goodies

If you were swapping motors to the newer one it has to be from a 1997 only, 1998 up have a returnless fuel system. You don't need to take anything else when you pull the SPI motor. Just remove the 1.9, find a 1997 2.0, install the 2.0. Buy an msd rpm activated switch, set it for 3500rpm and plug it into the secondary intake manifold solenoid. Everything else is plug and play
