Default Gearing question

One of the things recommended to me early on as a "best bang for the buck" mod was a steeper rear end gear. I have a couple questions regarding this. One, after purchasing a book on potential projects for 5.0s, I read a section on changing out rear end gears, and it said applicable years were only '86 and above. I'm wondering if it's even possible for my '82 GT to get a rear-end swap. Second, having an older GT, it has the SROD-4 four speed transmission with .7:1 overdrive, and an extremely steep first gear. I run 2,000 RPMs at 70 MPH, would steeper rearend gears be a wise choice for my car if I wish to keep it streetable for the years to come. If not, it comes to another far off question...how much is a transmission swap? Thanks.

82 GT's have a 7.5 inch rear so you would be better off to swap in a 8.8 inch rear and T-5 five speed tranny. The SROD is a three speed with OD and they suck. I had a 82 GT back when they were new.

Do you know how much getting an 8.8 inch swap along with a T-5 transmission would run?
