Default Captain Know-it-all strikes again!

Ok, I am fishing on the skyway bridge yesterday. I got to talking to another mustang guy. He was probably 18-20, he had a nice red hatch with a stock 302. We just got to talking and he had made to the comment about how much he spent on his heads. They were AFR's but I don't know which. He said that before he purchased them he had a set of ported and polished iron with oversized valves on it and it made no difference. I told him it should have made some difference. So there is the arguement. I told him some one must have done a crappy job porting them, even just the valves should have done some improvement. So guys, whats your opinions? Shouldn't even iron heads with port & polish work with 1.90 and 1.64 valves make a difference?

If the car was ill equipped though, would the "seat of th pants dyno" truly recognize a significant gain?!

Say it was a non-A9L car, or even worse, a non-MAF car. Stock cam still. Etc. My assumption is that it could have seemed as if it did nothing for the car, due to the lack of preperation.... Also, if the port work was waaay overkill, or done incorrectly - couldn't that infact hinder performance, esp on an otherwise stock 302?!

Just another p.o.v. on the situation!!

When I said to the guy that they may have jacked up the port work he went into who did it and how much blah blah blah. On a set of stock 351w heads vs a stock set ported & polished, 1.90 and 1.64 valves put in what is the gain? Anyone have a guess?

If he didn't bump the timing to take advantage of the aluminum heads and if his tune was not all that great to begin with, he probably wouldn't notice much of a difference. A little bit of timing can go a long way.
