Default Chatter from engine bay.

The video camera picked-up too much noise so I'm not sure this video will help with my question.

Sometimes when I crank the car, I hear a rhythmic squeak. It sounded as thought I was coming from the alternator. My 98 did it too and a shot of WD-40 fixed it right up.

Today I installed my wideband O2 so I wanted to test it out. I nailed it in second from a low RPM and let it carry up until the car hit around 6,500 or 12.5:1 on the new gauge. I let out and came home.

I pulled into the garage and I have this chatter noise coming from the car. It seems to be coming from the alternator. I say that because the noise is focused right above it. A little to the left or right and it fades.

Thoughts?

thats an easy one. my 3g 130 did that after I put a new tensioner on. The 3g's have fans on the inside of the housing, is sounds like the fans on the inside are hitting the alternator housing. when I pulled mine off there was "play" in the shaft like a bearing broke or something. I just got a new one and then no issues. id try that.

Could there be too much tension causing the alternator to do this?

I know of issues with the idler pulley on the 4.6 platform but the alternator going out in this way is new to me.

Could I rebuild it or should I get a new unit?

Can I still drive on it?

I drove on mine for a few days but it just got louder the longer I let it go. This is just a suggestion what your problem could be. I'd say get a new one...

Some are suggesting a tensioner or idler pulley. The noise goes away when it gets warm. Did yours?
