Default T-5 question

OK some guy at work traded a 87 foxbody originally was a 4 cylinder, now he put a 302 carbed, now i am pretty sure he gots the 7.5 rear end in it,or i could be wrong, but he did say he put a new tranny and motor in it,not sure bout the motor, when ever i went full trothle it hesitated n sputtered maybe it needs a tune up or something, but anyone in here knows how to tell the diference between the t-5 or 4 cylinder tranny? it does feel nic en firm when it shifts ,thinking of buying the car and using it for parts,i got a auto in mine i am just tired of the auto,le tme know please.

The first gear in a 4cylinder t5 is extremely short, I believe it 4.XX ratio in first gear compared to the 3.35 in a stock non wc t5.

The input shaft should be smaller on the 4-banger T5. You can turn down a V8 T5 input shaft to put it behind a 2.3, but you'd need a bushing or something like that to put the 2.3 T5 into a V8 car. I'm told that swapping the shafts isn't a big deal.

I'd imagine about the same performance from either tranny... the 4 cylinder t5 is going to come off the line harder, but the difference in the 1st and 2nd gear ratio may cause a car to fall out of the powerband and lose ground there. Also, I would think the big difference in 1st and 2nd gear ratios in the 4cyl t5 would cause a ton of stress on that poor tranny, especially attached to a v8 with traction.

The input shaft is smaller at the snout. I have seen them run without a pilot bearing with no vibration, so changing the input shaft isn't mandatory. There is also an oddball pilot bearing that works though I can't remember off the top of my head what the application is.

i think helmut know where to get the right pilot bearing.

T-5's all eventually fail, but yes, the 4 banger version seems to not last as long. I hadn't thought about it until reading this, but that probably is part of the reason, good thinking.

All the gear ratios are different. except for 4th (1to1).
The 4cyl input shaft (4th drive gear) has a different tooth count so it can't be changed with one from a v8. Lots of other small differences inside.
