Default SVO Timing

my 86 SVO has never been tuned since i got it back from the shop. i had new head, ARP head studs, roller cam, adjustable cam sprocket installed. i also just completed the porting of the upper intake to match the 65mm T/B.

question is where should i set my timing? the shop set the timing at 6degree advanced; and left the cam sprocket at 0. my turbo doesnt come in till 3100 rpms and its gradule increase of boost; when it use to come in at 1500 rpms and dam near instant. when it builds boost around 12psi sounds like a rev limiter is kicking in and the engine flutters (did this before the 65mm t/b as well). i replaced all the vacumm lines and nothing changed. the distributor module points to the firewall. before it went into the shop the module was pointed to the front left beind the alternator bracket. and the MPG blows now as well. lucky to get 225miles to a tank with it set on standard

The stock timing is 10 so being set at 6 isn't doing you any favors. If it's intercooled and you use good gas you should try 12 and see how the car does.

I don't know what to tell you about the poor gas milage. Have you checked the plugs? It sounds like it is running rich (obiviously). Is your 02 sensor plugged in and working?

Slow boost is usally do to a boost/exhuast leak. Might check you actuator and make sure it's nice and tight.
What cam did you put in?

If you run a front mount or a bigger ic,you can run 18 or so of timing.

I run 16 on mine it seems to run best there(track times) had gone all the way up to 20 with no detonation with 93 octane and 15 psi with the knock sensor unplugged.

Mine with 10 timing was having came problems as yours, aggravated the hell out of me till i figured it out.

It will be a dramatic increase in power, response, mileage everything. You will be very happy with it once you turn the timing up.

Mike "SpyVO" came up up to assist me yesterday with it. we unplugged the knock sensor, set the timing at 10 and threw 93 in it. massive increase from the 6degree timing.i have his old FMIC for the car now. massive NPR ic out of the isuzu box trucks ad 2.5" piping/ very impressive job mike did on it. we discused more timing out of the car but his personal experiances found 10 to be the best timing for his SVO so we ran 10 on mine. is more timing can be had i will experiment more out of mine maybe check out 12-15 timing on it. go up alittle at a time till i hear some detonation then come back alittle

I run a roller out of the ranger and the newer mustangs(dual plug heads),they are the same cams in both.

I run mine 4 retard for top end pull, has great power everywhere,it seemed to help everywhere when i retarted the cam timing.with the cam timing at 0 it stopped pulling about 5500 rpm's,cam come in with turbo about 3000 rpm's.I retarted the cam to 4 and cam came in about same 3000 rpm's but pulls past 6000 rpm's and pulls harder on the top end than it did on 0 timing(3and4th gear).
Just take some time to play with it until you get it to your liking

when you get time to mess with it,you will find you can run more timing and the power increase i awesome, just going from 10 to 14 on my car was like I had put nitrous on it,night and day difference, good for a couple of tenths at the track(lakeland).

I have a starion front mount on my stang, but am looking for a npr ic to put on instead.
