4-banger as Daily Driver?
95-96 240's go for 2500 to 3500 all day long BTW. Thought of snagging one before the sharkmouth. Torque, gas mileage, handling and a dash of modern techno-gizmos.
If you really want, I will let you drive my car for a week...you know my background and my affinity for fun cars. You'd like the 240 alot...it is the Japanese Mustang only with more interest (sadly).
Anyway, just thought I would add that. I did alot of thinking on what I posted, but thought it must be said. Talk to me once and again.

Think about how much more maintenance/parts/labor etc you'll spend on a beater..... what about the difference in gas expense?
15k miles year = roughly 440 gallons of gas in the XB
15k miles year = roughly 682 gallons of gas in a beater @22mpg. Just in gas ur saving $450-500 year or roughly $40/month with the XB. If you factor everything in the XB is probably only about $150-200/month more than a 10yr old beater given gas, repairs, maintenance, etc.
I'm closing on my house in April so I know where you are coming from on ways to cut costs. You could probably trim half of that monthly difference just by changing a few small things. Don't go out quite as often..... if you eat out often, try cutting back on that... big savings there. If you had a $500+ car payment you might have a point, but not the case here.

Only gripe I ever had with the 8-plug 2.3L was the plug wire/plug removal from under the upper intake plenum. You have to have the tool made for reaching the plug wire boot though the runners.

just wait till i finally buy a 4 banger fox............ and drive it for 3 years to see how it holds up. jfwy
honestly i dont know much about the 2.3's but they cant be that bad, i mean i see THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS driving around everyday, hell i see more 2.3's than 5.0's on the road......
now with crunching numbers and all i'm not going to get to in depth with that, but cheaper insurance, not horrid gas and no payments has to come out lower than what the scion costs.
as far as dependability, i would say its prolly gonna be a hit or miss deal, one might run forever with no problems, another might shit out on the first day..........
i would buy one. but my whole reasoning for that would be to v8 convert it down the road
if you wanna getter dun for real, get a 91-92 camaro with the TBI 305, thats what i had back in the day. those motors have good torque , decent gas mileage and, run forever and ever.......
but then again, your in a joe dirt camaro, a minor step up from the getter dun stang.......... i love 3rd gens and stangs............
