They lost out when they stopped making the Escort, they are going to bring back a whole line of econo/sport compact cars including the Pinto, Escort, and Fiesta (Newer version of the Festiva). Sounds good to me 
On a side note, there is no way Toyota has the means to be buying out Ford, now an assembly plant joint operation could be seen, but that would be a nightmare and Ford would stand to lose alot of their loyal customers. I think it has something to do with Ford itself and not other companies.
