Default why does my car fall right on its ass?

i put a new starter in today. car started strong as hell. i disconnected the idle bypass thing and the car still ran but i had to give it some throttle to keep it alive. i disconnected the battery for 5 minutes and started it again with the idle bypass pluged in(did i do this right?). car idled by itself! for the first time ina month. ne ways i was all happy thought the car was finally fully fixed. i pulled out of my drive way.. smoked like a mother.. black smoke. and i had to give it full thottle to keep it alive again. it ran like this b4 the new starter too. Im just wondering why this is happening??! it idled by itself in my garage and when i took it for a spin it fell straight on its ass!! im running out of time need it fully drivable before tuesday.ne idea on what could be the problem?

Sounds like the dreaded idle surge. What mods does it have? Non stock injectors, mass air, fuel pressure regulator, throttle body? What is your timing set at?

A lot of cars won't idle when you pull the IAB plug. Nothing strange about that. You probably need to clean the living daylights out of the IAB. Reset your Idle adjusting screw, Check your TPS with a digital voltmeter. It should be read between .95 and .98 volts, preferably right around .98. Also, clean the contacts on your 10 pin connectors (those are the 2 round plugs/bundle of wires about the size of a quarter that are sticking up between the firewall and the back of the intake manifold. Here's a litttle how to on that...

The black smoke you are seeing is unburned fuel. For some reason, you seem to be running way rich. Did you install an adjustable fue regulator and maybe have it set too high. Should be 38 psi with the vacuum line off. Did you get a kink in your return line to the tank somehow somewhere. Sounds like you need to go back to square one and check the settings and assembly of just about everything on the fuel, intake and ignition systems.

Definately a MAF problem from the symptoms given.

Missed the part about it idling when you pulled the mass air. We must have been typing at the same time. I've never tried firing up the car without the meter but on a cold start, the car runs off of programmed fuel and spark tables. One would think the mass air couldn't mess that up but who knows? Could be something happened to the mass air meter during all the work. It could be sending all sorts of conflicting data to the computer that is confusing the hell out of it. I would put a different meter on to see if it makes any difference. If you don't have one, I've got a stocker out in the garage you can try.

Another possibility is...the ECT sensor and maybe even the ACT sensor. Could you have damaged either of those during the work...or not plugged them back in even. The ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) is the sensor that screws into the metal heater pipe just behind where it screws into the intake manifold. The ACT (Air Charge Temp) The ECT is probably the most important..it tells the computer whether to run in open loop or closed loop, how much timing and fuel to add or subtract at certain times and so forth. Just grasping at straws here. Usually when you take something apart that was working before and now it doesn't work right, it is some stupid little thing that you forgot to hook up or something that you weren't even working on and knocked loose.
