You'll have all that hot fluid in the torque converter right up by the rear of the engine radiating heat back towards it.

That's all I've got.

I'd go with increased load on the engine...

if your running the factory tranny cooler in the radiator it will run warmer, id run a extra cooler with outa dought, id get the biggest one you can fit, it will prolong the tranny/converter life, its worth the extra time to install, very easy and cheap.....

It doesn't matter. That fluid will radiate heat just like Leonard said. It's still going to heat it up a little bit. Experiment if you want to a little bit. Throw a 160ยบ thermostat on there. See if it ends up right around 185-190.

Just a thought from far left field here. Could the viscocity of the tranny fluid have anything to do with anything? Reason i mention this is i had an auto with 3k stall and was running regular factory fluid which had the car running at a solid 198-200 degrees. This was with an aftermarket cooler mounted up front of the condenser. Didn't matter if i was in stop and go or on the hwy. Then a switched to redline synthetic after a bit and the temp dropped 5-6 degree's. Did a thermo mod to drop it from 180 to 160 which dropped the running temp another 10 degrees.

Then again that all may have been happenstance, but i thought i'd throw that out there.
