And as too the Focus, it is a decent car for a daily driver(good on gas and cheap insurance) and can be quite fun for auto-x. The after maeket for it is quite large and with the new 2.3 motor out they are comming out with quite a few parts for it as well.
I was in the same boat, tired of paying $350 a month on auto insurance and a car note. So as of yet I can't get another Mustang, but I will say I have missed mine everyday since I sold her.

Not being able to do what you want to do to your car is not a reason to sell it. If I felt like you I would have sold my car a long time ago.
Use the mustang as a daily driver, as I'm sure a zx3 will cost you more $ than your fox already does with car payments and all.
What do you have to make close to 400hp?
