I think James sums it up for your 87. Unless you have a Mass air conversion kit on the car, swapping cams might give you some headaches.

Now if your car has the mass air conversion on it, I would go with the E303 from Ford Motor Sports. It's pretty much got the max lift you can take with a stock bottom end, stock heads, stock valves and springs, and stock rockers. I ran the E303 with all of those things stock, except I ran 1.7 Cobra rockers. I got about 20,000 miles on the motor before the stock valve springs gave out. It was a good cam and gave a pretty decent idle. It also pulled nicely to 5500rpms, which is as far as I would turn the stock setup. If you are wanting to get a few more miles off the stock items, maybe a B303 from Ford would keep those stock valve spings around.

Good Luck

You'll feel a noticeable, but not big, difference with the intake. Stock heads are a major bottleneck to achieving power with these cars. They money you pay for only an intake alone isn't worth it and is more work for you to deal with when it comes time to put on a set of better heads. Off the shelf chips are the biggest waste of money ever. Only when you build an engine for a specific application are you better off getting a chip burned. The preprogrammed ones for stock applications just plain suck. For a pretty much stock motor a 65mm TB is pretty much all you need. Always make sure the MAF is the same size or larger than the TB, but don't go too big on the MAF to avoid idling issues. Make sure the MAF you buy is calibrated for the size injectors you are using.

By swapping to the mass air, you can run the later computer and that is more cam friendly. It is a bit of work to change out the wiring, but that's the price.

Sure after market heads would help a lot!! They will flow so much better than stock heads. Now if you change the heads out, you can't get a head with an intake valve that is bigger than 1.95. Anything bigger than that, you will risk tapping the 'stock' piston and that will really ruin your day....
