Hopefully its big enough. My car has a 40mm factory wastegate from the factory for a 3.3 L motor. Your engine is 50% larger than mine but if you are lucky a 15% larger wastegate might work. I can certainly understand why your 3Xmm didn't work.
There is science and mathmatics you could apply to this problem to determine exactly that size will work for you turbo and engine combo but you appear to prefer the difficult path of guesswork.

No guessing involved.
The 38mm should work fine but since I am going for least amount of boost to start where most people are going for max the 38mm can not bleed enough off.
As Dave said I could take the 38mm apart, pull out the spring, ad manually hold it open and still make 8 lbs of boost at 4,000 rpms ! :o Talk about spooling quickly.
Looks like the 46mm will go on Monday if everyones schedules line up.
