Default Gapping plugs

Is there a standard formula that can be used in gapping spark plugs, considering that the original recomendations from the manufacturer are designed for a stock engine? Since a stock 302 is supposed to be gapped at 0.054, but if you have modifications that allow more fuel into it,or you car runs rich should you not gapped it higher( farther away ) so that it allows more fuel to be burned off, like perhaps 0.060

Just wondering
