How much to install a 351 in a 98gt?
How much to install a 351 in a 98gt?
I was just wondering, how much would it cost to have a 351 installed in a 98gt?
Parts and labor because my mechanic skills are pretty much nonexistant.
I'm looking for a 351 with the heads and cams combination and whatnot to make put down about 400hp. Carb or fuel injection?
What else would be required? I'm guessing a Cobra R hood, I would like 275s on the rear to make it look meaner and for traction, would I need gears...like 3.55's or something? and a better suspension system to make the car handle better....like something from Saleen or Steeda.
What about a 392? Would one fit in a 98gt chassis? Would it make the car to nose heavy?
Who in the Bay area could install something like this and how much would they charge?
Thanks for the replies.

It's going to cost a decent amount. In my opinion Carb would be the way to go, you would have to swap computers to run EFI because you have an OBD-II setup and it would be a PITA to do. As far as who can do it, you need to ask yourself how much you want to spend. I'm sure Fordspeed or any other shop around could do it, but it's not going to be cheap. I would venture to say somewhere in the 10k range. I don't think your transmission will mount up, so you'll need a new one. I'm not trying to discourage you, but it's going to cost a lot. If you were dropping it into a '94-'95 it would curtail the cost a bit because you'd already have the tranny, cpu and other stuff to do it.

I'm not really planning on doing it though, I was just curious to see how much it would cost for an engine swap.
Would it cost the same to swap in a 5.4 DOHC engine?
How about a 4.6 DOHC engine stroked to 5.0?
I'm just wondering what would be the best engine swap and how much it would typically cost.

There's an excellent tech article in the new nov. 03 5.0 Mustangs and Super Fords. They took a 5.4 out of a 00 e-150 van. Quoting article ... "How much did the swap cost, you ask? The 5.4 found at the recycler for $1,150, and the stock motor brought in 450. All told, with miscallaneous gaskets and billet aluminum for the adapters, it was less than $900 to go from a 98,000 mile stock 4.6 to a 4,000 mile 5.4 with a lot mroe potential."
Obviously this doesn't say anything about installation charges, but they would not be bad at all because the only thing changed on the e-150 engine was using the stock gt intake. All other components from the heads, the cams, and the internals are exactly the same!
They picked up 30hp and 90lb/ft of torque to the rear wheels. This is a relatively cheap swap and the gains are tremendous. More of the older mod motors should be looking towards this swap I believe. Only problem was clearance for the intake which was easily taken care of with a handsaw to the hood. This is a SOHC setup, but is still worth it IMO.

I would not go with the 5.4L, why would you? Its only got decent tq, the hp is not that great. What motor you should use depends on what you want. If you just want to run a fast 1/8mile than maybe the 5.4 would be fine. But if you want alot of hp I would go with a 4.6L modular with forged internals.

actually, the 5.4 in the tech article made more hp at every rpm and more torque at every rpm when tested with the exact same stock gt parts equiped and tuned. Why wouldn't you want 50 more ci's?

Last time I checked (about 2-3 years ago) FRPP sells tons of stuff for the 351 swap. Remember the 95 Cobra R came with a 351 from the factory, so the parts are out there.
