My newest problem with the 5.0

I was on my way back from Chris's party Monday afternoon comin from Tampa to St.Pete when my speedo goes wack on me.It bobbed and then quit. Totally smacked dead bottom and occasionally went up and down a lil bit. Well I got halfway home and then smoke starts pouring through my shifter and tranni area. I wondered what the hell could be burning.

Turns out its the cable for the speedo, the gear piece and all was dangling and barely in the tranni and in turn the tranni was leaking onto my h pipe making the nicest smoke all the way home.

I looked under it yesterday and found im missing the lil bolt or screw the connects and holds the gear in the tranni.

I needed a new wire as mine was all frayed from heat or something in its previous ownership and I need that lil bolt still sop I bought a new cable from Autozone for 18 bucks and grabbed two new zerk fitted u-joints while I was at it.If its not the u-joints then o well,I guess im just gonna have to have them spin it and see how unbalanced it is or get a new yoke..

(Question)....
Can my u-joints be fitted to my driveshaft with a hammer?I was told I could not do it, well rather in exact words ,have fun..

I took that as it being super hard to do it with a hammer and my friend told me he broke a vice trying to get his back on the shaft, should I have someone with a pneumatic press do this?

pics here....

I would honestly just have the shop that is gonna balance it put new u-joints in if you are not equipped for it. When I had a DS made for my 460 car it was only $10-15 to have them do it, wasn't even worth my time.

Also check to see how much it will cost you to get it balanced and for the u-joints as it may be just a little more to get an aluminum DS. I think you will be in the $70 area for your DS and $150 for a new one, something to consider.

Try Fleetpride - 626-6197. They have built a couple custom drive shafts for my dad. Reasonable prices, and fairly fast.

mikes driveline charges us $5 a joint. Its not very hard to do it with a hammer, just easier with a press.

Now you gotta take your dash apart to do the speedo cable ;)

Very very fun!
I have done it once, its gonna suck again to lol....

and for everyone else who is telling me to get a new driveshaft, well thats a good idea for someone with money, im just gonna guess its the front u -join and then have someone smack two new ones in there....
if its still wobbling then its either the yoke or the d/s....

bricks, drop in reverse, brick the gas pedal and get out, then get mad and kick the car off the bricks, then let it roll out of the window one story up from a ravine, that will definatley roll something, not sure bout the milage:lol:

1 question. Do you eat? WHY?????:D

It should be an unwritten rule that a guy cannot spend money on trivial things such as food, clothing, toilet paper, etc.. until he is solidly in the 12's.;)

Race495,I hardly eat lol so when I do eat its not like that little money I spent to eat will buy me a driveshaft.

I currently work for a lawn biz making a little bit of money.1 guy just left so im takin his spot. They are paying me jack shit for money and I need more to keep on top of insurance and credit card shit so I am asking for a raise and if he doesn't then I leave and he is screwed.

Money sucks when u dont have any !

How about this, I was at 7-11 last night talking to a manager, he said for the night shift they pay $11.15/hr to start. You should get you a night job manning the slurpee machine and next thing you know you have a 500hp monster.

j/k but that really isn't too bad pay wise.

Hell, the mcdonald's here in Brandon starts at $7.50/hr for some shifts.

Even to this day I work 2 seperate jobs (I almost always have) so that I can justify to myself what I spend on my car. My main income is not touched for my hobbies.

Goopster1 09-11-2003 08:37 PM

damn thats crazy 11 bucks!
holy jesus, im gonna check into shitty 7-11 lool....

Goopster1 09-11-2003 08:47 PM

well problem was found to be the front u-joint(connected to yoke)

Well the older than dirt u joint had a lot of play in it and when we took it apart the needle bearings just fell out and were nice and rusty lookin and had no grease in there at all.
Now it has a new zerk fitted u-joint on there.

all in all it was worth it but it did take a while doing it myself and with a friend. We mixed a few old caps with new because we kept wanted to see how my friend old driveshaft was taken apart.
So he brought out the old yoke and u joint and we ended up taking ours apart and for some odd ass reason mixed the old one and put the new needle bearings into that, well the older was longer and the newer ones were shorter, so pressing a longer cap in the joint made the shorter pop out passed its point of the c clip, so when we tried to pound the cap back in to put the c clip in, it just pushed the other side out and fucked the needle bearings up lol.

I dont know why we even delt with other bearings and another u joint, im staying away from my friends and ideas for now on lol....

O well, rides nice and smooth now
