Default New to Mustangs..have some questions..

hey..Im looking to buy a 94-98 mustang gt here soon and I have some questions about buying one used and a few other things..I was into Imports but have decided to go for a mustang..Problem is Ive never researched anything about them..I know a few basic things..but not much otherwise..Anyhow here are the questions I have..How much diffrence in power will I expierence from the 5.0 to the 4.6? I wanna spend about 5 or 6k on it..How many miles should I try to stay around? Over 100K..Any good? And I need to know some basics on modifying, What gives me good power..What things to buy first for it..How much HP Ill gain with these parts..I know its a lot of questions..Any help is greatly appreciated..Thanks

Thanks to Goopster also for helpin me out and refering me to the ford forum.

Hey another SN95 fan. I have to agree with Mars gears should be one of the first mods as well as a short shifter(not only for shorter shifts but you wont bend your shift forks when shifting hard) and subframe connectors. For 5-6k you will most likely be better off with a 94-95 5.0 (I will be selling mine very soon) cause you can find them cheap and parts are not as expensive as the 4.6l engines. It is going to be hard to find a 5.0 with low miles but if they have been taken care of mileage isnt a issue. BTW I am not saying the 5.0 is a better engine than the 4.6l.

if you wanna do it cheaper, get a 5.0 , alot of used/ cheap parts out there......... the sn-95 5.0's have a few problems here and there and are a lil more expensive than the older FI 5.0's to mod but not much..........

then again, a 96-98 4.6 with the 99 up PI heads and some bolt ons will fly............

the head swap is like 1k...........

the sn 95 is a great platform for a street car, or anything else really........

and both motors are relativly cheap and easy to modify...........

if i were to build up either, i would do: (in this order)

nice tires

exhaust,

minor boltons: TB, pullys, CAI, etc

GEAR,

chip..... (tune again for heads if ya do them)

and after that go after a nice set of heads/ intake combo (&cam on the 5.0)

You should be able to find a 94/95 with around 70-90k miles on it in the $6500 range. Look at a lot of cars before you buy, and find a five speed.

I'm partial to the 302 V8s simply because of the quantity of parts out there for them and I am more familiar with old school small blocks.

Like everyone else, gears are a great first mod, and they will wake the car up. 3.73's are the minimum, but don't be afraid of 4.10's.

Subframe connectors are the second item to consider. They won't make you faster, but they will make the car feel more solid.

Long tube headers, off road H pipe, and a nice cat back would be the third thing.

edit - Oh yeah, then find a decent turbo kit. I guess you probably shouldn't waste the money on the headers and H pipe.

Hmmm, just got rid of my 98...Had I known there was a market for it, I would have gave you a ring. If your going to get 94-98...Then stick with the 98. Mine ran well for having virtually no mods in comparisson to many others and I hadn't done the 99+ headswap. She ran 12s @ 107mph with U/D pullies and Mac o/r h ($150 for both) JMS chip ($300) 3.90 gears ($250 installed) and a NOS kit 5171 75 dry shot ($300 shipped to my door) She made 286.7rwhp and 385.5rwtq.

IMHO, I would spring the extra $1000 and just get yourself a 99. That way you don't have to worry about the heads. Cause believe me, no matter what you do to the car. Your going to hear many 96-98 owners raving about how much faster and harder their car pulls/runs now that they have done the head swap. Just save yourself the trouble of paying for the kit ($1200+s&H) plus the cost of the install and by a car with the heads already on it.

Best of luck in which ever route you choose!

5-6k and a small budget really limits you to a 5.0. Get a 94-95. If i had to mod all over again i would have gotten my rear gear first because the performance difference from a 2.73 to 3.73 is phenominal. Then basic bolt ons such as headers, flowmasters, u/d pulleys, and if you shift hard your going to need a pro 5.0 shifter. I can't believe i havnt bent any shift forks yet, or maybe i have, it has poped outta gear a couple times.

i'd stick with the 96-98 4.6 and do the head swap ......

the 99 ups have the shitty ignition and fuel system......... and i like the 96-98 look better!

IMO
