Used car sales
Anyone else having some fun with selling their used cars lately?
The last two I've sold were a pain in the ass. I try and take care of my people, but when it starts to cut into my wallet I have to draw the line. . I know a few of you buy sell and fix them up!
Last one was the 1997 Taurus SHO. Sold fairly quickly, fairly cheap, $3,000. A week after I sold it the guy says it's stalling all the time. Now it's a used car so I don't have to do anything but I decide to take care of it because that's how I do business. Ended up having a bad coil on plug so I replaced the whole set of them. I gave him the option then to take the 3g's back and I'd take the car back so there's no bad feelings, he says he'd get back to me. The stalling goes away, he never gets back with me on the refund. Two weeks later the guy says it's hard to start, check it out, fuel pressure is low and not holding over night, and she needs a fuel pump. I went ahead and bought a pump to put in the car, he doesn't call me back for another month and is now asking for his money back ...WTF?!
I really don't feel like replacing the pump in that car now, so I think I'm going to call it quits and let the guy take care of it himself. Does that sound fair?
I'm not an ass, but I don't warranty cars. I buy them, get them running and ship them. I don't sell them for a lot so that way I don't have to deal with the nitpickers.
This last one still books at well over 3,000 in poor running condition.
Just a rant no one actually has to reply if they don't want to

Dude, you did way more than you needed to do by even checking to see the coil was bad. Anything after that he is EXTREMELY fortunate.
You don't know how he's driven it, or how many miles he's put on it since he bought it. I can't possibly see how giving him a full refund is fair. If anything, tell him you'll give him a refund minus the cost of a rental car for every day he's owned it. He may end up owing you money HAHA.

It is a used car, sold without a warranty. You were nice enough to replace the coil and that is pretty good service after the sale. I would just tell him, yea, the fuel pump is bad. I can replace it for $$$$ or you can take it to a shop of your choice..... Have a nice day.....

I agree with both previous posters.
I have sold two vehicles in the last 3 months. No problems for me. Of course, that may be due to the fact that one was a 65 Mustang that I sold for $1500, and a 94 Mustang vert that I sold for $300. Both ran and drove. For that amount of money, they're LUCKY the cars ran and drove. But yeah, tell this guy to get bent. The car came with a tail light warranty....and it's been a LONG time since you saw the tail lights. LOL

thats where your problem lies, the minute you do something nice for these guys they think they can just keep taking advantage of you. I stopped a long time ago on being nice to people who buy cars from me. heck you do the fuel pump and he'll come back in 6 months when his brakes are bad, tires worn and needs an oil change. Heck you do that and I'll come buy a car from you

When I sell a car the best warranty they get is 30 miles or 30 mins. Which ever comes first.
Cars are sold as is.
If I sell a car with something that I know is bad, I will explain to potential buyers that the clutch is on its way out or that its having issues with fuel pressure. Things like that. To hide those kinds of things would be a dick move. And I couldnt live with myself if I did that. But I'll be damned if they come back to be a month later and bitch to me that the clutch finally took a shit and expect me to do something about it. They can go pound sand. Thats life.
People will try to get what ever they can out of you. If you act like a sucker, people will take advantage of you and treat you like one.

Only problem I have had selling cars was once on here I sold a honda to a ricer, the car was right at 300,000 and i posted it had an overheating issue and I recommend it be towed by the new owner. Kid bought it and over heated it 6 times the first night he had it trying to drive it home to ocala from riverview. And my step dad bought a car from me, had it for 6 months and then bitches that I sold him a pos after he never changed the oil on it and it devolped an engine tap in the head.

Never sell cars to friends and family.. that for sure is a nightmare.
You want to know the hitch.. here it is. Someone brings you a car to look at.. Example Expedition with 170k miles.. check engine light on.. You check codes, fix a vacuum leak.. charge minor labor.. customer leaves. A week latter they call and now it has a miss.. it needs a tune-up.. they pay for tuneup.. oil change.. they leave. Week latter now has a vibration.. and they have "Spent money" getting the car fixed. Now they have spent money with you.. had the car to your shop on multiple times.. keep having problems and want you to do something about it. Once you layed hands on it and performed some serious a "ring on the finger scenario" happens.
Point is.. sell a car... big as-is on the paper work. Tell them to bring their mechanic to inspect it.. he can fix it when something goes wrong. I never tell people I fixed this and that on the car, cause if you do.. they will assumme you will fix it when it breaks cause you missed doing so when they had bought the car.
The more miles and years on a car.. the bigger the headache.
