My grandfather passed away 10 months ago, and we've spent the past few months helping out with cleaning the house up for my grandmother. My dad and I were cleaning out one of his rooms today, when we came across a silver chest. When we opened it up, we found 4 guns in there, with lots of ammo for each, and a couple extra magazines, along with some newspaper clippings from the 60's for some reason.

First off, an S&W .38 Special. Nothing too special here, just needs a SERIOUS cleaning.

Second, there's an H&R Topbreaker, 7 shot .22 revolver in there... This one's in good shape, but I can't seem to identify a specific model number/name for it. I believe it's a 'spurless hammer' design??

Third, a tiny, pocket sized semi-auto Colt .22. This one's damn clean, and everything is operating smoothly.

Fourth is my personal favorite. It's a Savage .32 semi-auto pistol. It's a little dirty, but looks great still. Looks to be a model 1917.

My dad's given them to me, saying I can do what I want with them whether that be sell, or clean and shoot. I was wondering, if I supplied pictures of course, if anyone could help me out with identifying and shedding some light on these guns and their value, if any? I don't care about selling them and, honestly, I'd rather have them all be worthless so I can put plenty of rounds through them and not feel like I'm losing money...

I can't, however they're all really cool, new-to-me guns, minus the S&W, and I meant I'd rather them be worthless so I could keep them without hesitation. The Savage is my personal favorite out of the group, although the little .22 topbreaker is a neat little revolver. 7 shots, the plunger is automatic, and it's a spurless hammer design. Neat little gun!

Step 1: Remove all plastic or wood parts, such as grips
Step 2: Thoroughly clean with gun cleaner, such as the stuff you can pick up at Walmart.
Step 3: Take good pics both close up and far away.
Step 4: Apply gun oil to keep them safe while we figure out what they are.

I don't know a lot about guns. I had a pistol for awhile but ended up selling it.


My granddad passed away about 11 years ago and he left me a .22 marlin rifle. Even I can tell you that this gun is not really worth anything other than sentimental value to me. If it were worth a lot of money I would still treat it the same, unless it was a collectors piece that he never shot. I take my daughter and wifey to the gun range and shoot it every now and then. I clean it and everything and will never get rid of it. It is the only thing I have of his and to me, I'm sure he'd want it this way.

I checked, nope. Just weird sports shit... I think it used to cover up some of the boxes of ammo or some shit, not sure.

As stated...you can put value on sentiments. I was left a huge coin collection by my grandfather, and it will never be sold. I was left several old military rifles also, same condition he lef them in

Jeff. Get yourself on over to gunbroker.com and register. Then go to the ask the experts section and post clear pictures and there is more than a few guys that can give you an estimate on each gun and tell you a little more about each one. They can tell you when they were made and where and all youll need to know. They will however hate that your selling a hand me down from your grandfather. Before cars I was into guns. I think ive got like 6 or 8k posts over there since 04-5 or something.
