Oddly enough, Henry Ford is often credited with manufacturing the first automobile, yet he was not. He was simply the first one to actually put them onto an assembly line. He was also the one who came up with the concept of "an honest days pay for an honest days work".

Francois Duryea(sp?) was the first person to make an "automobile".

Also of note...Henry Ford also FAILED a few times before becoming successful with the Ford Motor Company. One of the companies he also started , yet sold his shares to was one which is about to go under....You might know of it...It's called "General Motors". Ever heard of it? Weird, but true.....I'll have to dig out my Ford book again.

Im fairly certain that Karl Benz was the first person to manufacture an actual automobile in the way we regard them, as in with the internal combustion engine and whatnot.

Other German contemporaries, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach working as partners, also worked on similar types of inventions, without knowledge of the work of the other, but Benz patented his work first and, after that, patented all of the processes that made the internal combustion engine feasible for use in automobiles. In 1879 Benz was granted a patent for his first engine, which he designed in 1878.

Nope...read on:

Running by February, 1893 and ready for road trials by September, 1893 the car built by Charles and Frank Duryea, brothers, was the first gasoline powered car in America.
Benz made the first internal combustion engine. Duryea brothers Frank and Charles put it together with the automobile.

Also...
Henry Ford had an engine running by 1893 but it was 1896 before he built his first car.
My info is taken from this site: http://www.ausbcomp.com/~bbott/cars/carhist.htm

We all know that Wikipedia is not reliable.

A little more trivia for you:

Henry Ford and his engineers used the first 19 letters of the alphabet to name their automobiles, although some of the cars were never sold to public.

Ok, here we go...
In 1902 he left the Henry Ford Company, which subsequently reorganized as the Cadillac Motor Car Company.
