Conversion Question
1991 5.0. I f I were looking to convert to 5 lug caliper brakes in the rear would it be easier to get an axle off of a later mustang and replace them or would it be easier to just buy the kit they offer on summit. If anyone could give me some direction in this area it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
If he runs a SN95 length axle back there he'll be limited to 17x8 - 17x9 wheels with a 275 tire. A 10.5 wheel wont fit with SN95 length axles.
The SN95 axle with everything together would probably be the most affordable and easiest way to get 5 lug with disc brakes back there.
How ever,.. if he just wanted 5 lug axles,.. he could do the ranger/explorer axle swap,.. and the outer drums just slide on. That would probably be the cheapest to get 5 lugs if he 'just' wants 5 lugs. Then use the SN95 spindle/hub up front.

1)You can either order 5-lug stock Fox length axle shafts from Moser or some other aftermarket axle shaft manufacturer or you can get the Ford Racing 5-lug drum conversion and sell the brake drums to someone else.
*If you order axle shafts, specify stock 28 spline for stock differential or obviously 31 spline if u have an aftermarket 31 spline diff.
*Also, specify that you need the disc brake lug studs installed. They are slightly longer than the standard drum lug studs because of the added thickness of the brake rotor compared to the brake drum.
2) You will need to buy the custom brake caliper brackets that move the SN95 calipers inboard to account for the shorter Fox-length axles. You can get these from North Cobra Racecars, just Google them and buy the caliper brackets for either SN95 V6/GT brake rotor or SN95 Cobra brake rotor, depending on which you are using. The Cobra rotors are larger diameter, hence the different brackets.
3) You'll need to modify the rear axle brake hard-lines to connect with the caliper soft lines.
4) You'll need to purchase and install '93 Cobra emergency brake cables if you want to keep emergency brake function.
5) You'll need to buy and install the proper master cylinder and brake proportioning valve set up to get the most from the rear disc upgrade.

If you want 10.5's back there then you'll need to keep the axles stock length. SN95 will NOT work. 10.5 wheels require a 6.5" BS. On a SN95 rear the axles are 3/4" wider on the outside of the axle housing to make room for the ABS exciter ring. Other then this,.. the axle housings are pretty much the same. If you tried to put 10.5" wheels on an SN95 axle in a Fox car they would stick out past the fenders and look ridiculous as well as probably rip your tires to shreds.
If you want disc brakes back there, there are kits that relocate the SN95 brackets so the calipers will fit fox length axles.
Personally unless your doing road racing,.. the stock disc/drum brakes are perfectly fine for normal driving. The easiest (To install) would be to use Ranger axles and drums. All that is required is to replace your 4 lug axles with the 5 lugs. Both are 28 spline. And the Ranger drums slide right on and are a direct replacement for your stock parts.
That would give you the correct axle width in order to fit wider wheels in the back to get the look your looking for.

No, you'll have to get stock Fox-length axle shafts in 5-lug. The 10.5" wide wheels on a Fox doesnt require MAJOR mods but there are some unique parts you'll need to get for it to come out right. The SN95 axle shafts are 3/4" longer on each side than the Fox axles, which would put 10.5" wide wheels well outside of the wheel well openings.

Had I read this before I made my post I would have just left yours.
Good info!

I have FR500 18 X 9's w/ 275/35's rear and 245/40 fronts. I used the North Cobra Race Car brackets. They worked perfect. I have the Cobra/Bullit set up all around and used the 5 lug ford Racing 31 spline Fox axles. It is stuffed and drives great.
Good luck!
