As far as customer service goes, I can imagine having a live person answering calls has to be expensive, but these big companies need to realize that bad customer service (namely automated systems) can piss off a customer FAST! I think Brighthouse might have Verizon there, but I was told the other day that Verizon was talking about changing the system to make getting a live person on the phone easier.
Anyway it sucks that your having troubles already. Hopefully they'll get you hooked up and running. Since I can't get DSL or FIOS in my area yet, I have brighthouse internet/tv and for the most part it's not too bad.
The minute I can get FIOS though, I'll switch, and not just because I work for Verizon but because I know how good it is.

Fios is crap in this area,
When you can get a HD signal, the sound cuts out every now and then and then when it does work the picture only does 720, the customer service sucks (wasn't on hold long) when I did get a person it was the copper wire dept, which hung up on me after they looked me up and found I was on fios. I called back only to hear that they cant help me and that they didnt have the fios number (a lie) when they installed the setup they used brighthouse's wire and brighthouse came out to disconnect and take the box off the wall(my request) they unhooked the verizon stuff and said that they owned the cable and verizon was not allowed to hook up to it. (understandable) I called verizon and they sent a tech out to fix it who lied to me by saying that they ran new wire. (the wire is marked Brightwire- Brighthouse's private markings)
The wire was also painted in a few places from when I painted the house. so I know it wasnt their wire. The billing is so messed up, I was without movie channels off and on for a month (you never knew when it would work) because apparently the billing dept had not added them to my bill but the tech dept had the order for it so the system would turn them off when it did an internal
audit. (was told by Escalation tech) Then my On demand wouldnt work for 3 days then it worked for 2 then back off for 2. then I found out after complaining 2 times to customer service that the HD pictured sucked and was only showing 480, that my HD box was never switched on allowing only SD programming. and the HD has crashed in my DVR's (two of them ) I had to spend 2 1/2 hours in one day talking to the CS people just to get a credit for
my HD programming I never received. Then on top of that I scheduled an appointment to have them look at my Internet Connection which was as slow as dial up, They made me first go through about 20min of optimization then set an appointment that they never showed up for and the Billing is even worse 3 months in a row I have gotten bills for over $350, so much for their $99/Mo special, this on top of the sales person down right lying to me when I
Signed up for the service.

BTW Brighthouse sucks too but never this bad. just dont have Knight do the work when you have it hooked up. ($3500 in damage) and last time they came here they put a hole in my Screen and cut one of my IR Repeater Lines.
$15K in Home theatre and they bumped around in here like Bumbling idiots.
And were escorted out last time. (at threat of bodily harm and Shotgun Blasts)

all my issues were solved and i got two months for free.
believe it or not a god damn knight tech was here until after midnight.
he left a cable modem hanging by a cable in a closet two feet from the ceiling, and no place to plug in power.
a supervisor came the next day and fixed everything.
