i find this is what gets me into trouble most.
without knowing someone, it's hard to sometimes get "how" they might be saying what they are typing.. (did that make sense).

whereas if the exact same thing were said in person it would be clear as a bell..

more of a lurker now with an occasional bleh...

I agree - knowing who you're talking to really helps you put things into proportion. Me saying "I'll kick you in the nuts!" is a lot more comical than, say, Lumberjack saying it.

 

^ Which is why I use smileys so much. Got to be a habit on the dog boards, since it's mostly women, and we can be quite bitchy and occasionally overly sensitive and reactive.

 

i don't get that. people all over the net seem to take what you say too seriously or think you're coming across as an asshole anytime you don't use a smiley. on the flip side, you could get away with calling his mother a dike and his sister a whore... as long as you use a smiley.

I know what you mean, Scott. I'm guilty of getting a little pissed off online - then my wife laughs at me for getting mad in a "chat room" and I realize that it really is kinda silly....although with the world getting more and more internet-absorbed, I can see why fights and tensions that start online sometimes branch off into daily-life.
