Though best known for the Mexican horror films he imported and dubbed into English, as well as numerous foreign children's films sold as"Kiddie Matinees" throughout the Sixties producer K. GORDON MURRAY also dabbled in American-made Southern-style exploitation such as Shanty Tramp (1966), Savages from Hell (196
, Thunder County (1974), and The Daredevil, the last starring role for Hollywood cowboy GEORGE MONTGOMERY. A crazed mix of racing, racism, and drug smuggling,
THE DAREDEVIL; another portrait of The Redneck as an American icon with an attitude that's about midway between Thunder Road and Smokey and the Bandit, helped in no small amount by the casting of big George. Though too old for the part and way too heavy (which isn't helped by his mutton chop; and hilariously garish Seventies wardrobe), Mr. Montgomery nevertheless turns on the charisma and manages to give this low-budget schlocker both some dignity and a pair of balls.
His character may be a jerk, but you can't help rooting for the dumb bastard. George plays Paul Tunney, a hot shot stock-car racer, who returns to the Golden Gate Speedway to go up against Ray Butler, the "first black" to race at the track. Tunney takes it in stride, "I have no objections... as long as he doesn't marry my sister!" But Tunney's aggressive driving forces Ray's car off the track which explodes in a ball of flame, incinerating the poor kid. (This film loves car crashes.) Understandably, Butler's sister Carol (GAY PERKINS) blames Tunney for Ray's death — which Tunney learns when he awakes in a coffin to be
scowled at by Carol and a drug-dealing mortician played by CYRIL POITIER, the older brother of Sidney, who seems to have trouble with even the simplest line of dialogue. Carol comes right to the point: "Every step you take, I'll be there, watching and waiting for you to die!" Sure enough, Tunney seems to see Carol everywhere he turns, which sends him on a guilt-fueled losing streak: "You're spooked, Tunney!"
Desperate for cash and more than a bit coerced, Tunney reluctantly accepts an offer from "bad-news" mobster Chris Barren who needs a "daredevil driver" to pick up and deliver packages of heroin. To further complicate matters: Barren is partners with the mortician whose mistress is Carol, Tunney is having a fling with TERRY MOORE (Mighty Joe Young), and the local sheriff is out to nail Tunney for an event that
happened decades ago. As expected, it all leads to a final, mad, out-of-control car chase as Tunney jabbed with a needle full of pure heroin, runs from both the mob and police while simultaneously hallucinating his brains out... There's even a brief but hilariously cheesy attempt at gore. So be a good ol' boy and buckle up, keep your eyes peeled for the law... and floor it! Bleah!
