Move over THUNDER ROAD, PIT STOP, and SPEED LOVERS. Here's an obscure "speedsploitation" programmer that burns rubber big time. THUNDER IN DIXIE, not to be confused with 1960s THUNDER IN CAROLINA, is not a low-budget laugh-fest or a disposable slice of backwoods cornpone - it is a serious "normal" movie you can sit back and actually watch.

Fast-paced, hard-boiled, well-acted, and tightly directed with a great moody THE HUSTLER-style music score by Elliot Lawrence. Ticker Welsh (MIKE BRADFORD) and Mickey Arnold (HARRY MILLARD) are stock car jockeys, former partners who "brake up" over a drunken accident that killed Ticker's old lady. They bluster around and become deadly rivals, all leading up to the really big stock car race finale where they will finally settle the score, even if one of them has to die... For such a seemingly macho enterprise, the women are the main focus of the film.

The daughter of Clark Gable and Loretta Young, soap opera actress JUDY LEWIS (Secret Storm, General Hospital) is especially good as Mickey's wife who keeps bouncing back and forth trying to straighten the two hotheads out. Thunder In Dixie is, as far as we can tell, Miss Lewis' only feature. NANCY BERG plays Karen, a southern-fried slut who preys on battered racers and falls hard for Ticker.

Her other significant screen credit is as Aurora in Herschell Gordon Lewis' kiddie flick, Jimmy, The Boy Wonder! And PAT McANDREW is a great bar-fly pick-up who says "lots of new faces in town for the stock car races."
